Artist Background and Statement
My sculpture has been internationally recognized and my worldwide travels have included Europe, Asia, USA and various Pacific Rim countries. I studied architectural drafting and painting in Germany with trips to Paris and Holland and was exposed to "Documenta" while in Europe. I returned to the USA and Hawaii to formally study art, architecture, anthropology, engineering, political science and law.
This diverse educational background has resulted in the development of many professional skills including: concept & prototype development; marketing, research & sales; project management and implementation planning. The multidisciplinary experiences enable me to effectively work with architects, engineers, real estate developers, interior designers and private individuals to design unique 3-D solutions to meet their varied needs.
My artistic style involves compositions, which contrast carefully selected materials and involve structural elements, which are based on anthropometric relationships to achieve a unique visual and spatial balance. Balance as a recurring theme in my work. I enjoy designing installations and insuring that the viewers are constantly involved with the artwork.
While making a living as an artist in the 80's I was shocked to find out that Contemporary Native Hawaiian Artists were not recognized as artists and that critics viewed Native Art as craft and not fine art. I have since been involved with securing recognition of the Contemporary Hawaiian Art movement by being involved with shows and encouraging younger artists to engage in art making. I enjoy participating in cultural exchanges that focus on the issues of the evolving contemporary native art.
I am excited that internationally Museums, Galleries and Critics are recognizing Contemporary Native Art and that this diversity adds to a rich international culture. Modern art has gone full circle.
Whether your creative requirements are for a desktop sculpture, a large-scale sculpture or a unique prototype, I am capable of satisfying all of your creative needs - from development of the original idea, to the construction of the artwork and final installation. Thank you! |
