Configuring Thunderbird 2.0 for Flexnet GMAIL ACCOUNT

Before setting up your email client (in this case, Thunderbird 2.0), you MUST MUST MUST setup your FlexGmail account for POP access. Failure to do this will doom any email client from ever working at all!

SETTING UP YOUR FLEXGMAIL ACCOUNT FOR POP3 ACCESS:

1. Please go to
http://webmail.flex.com to get to this login screen.
Sign in with your FLEXNET Username. Then sign in with your TEMPORARY PASSWORD you were issused. However, if already changed your password to something else, then of course put that in instead! Click "Sign In".

To find out your TEMPORARY PASSWORD, login to the Flexnet Member section. Your TEMP PASSWORD will be shown to you!

2. Click "Settings" in the upper right hand corner:

3. In the "Settings" screen area, you should be in "GENERAL" tab as shown (if not, click on "General").
Now, click on "Forwarding and POP":

4. DISABLE FORWARDING, make sure this radio button is checked! Make sure under "POP Download" you click under #1 the radio button "Enable POP for all mail", under #2 "delete flex.com's copy. Click "Save Changes" as shown.

SETTING UP Thunderbird 2.0:

Note: In rare cases, you will be denied access to SMTP/POP in FlexGmail. An error message will appear saying your username/password is wrong and is not accepted. If you believe this is you, open a help desk trouble ticket stating the passsword you are putting in. There is a workaround for this specific issue.

1. Open Thunderbird and click on "Tools" in the menu bar:

2. In the "Tools" Drop box, click on "Account Settings...":

3. A popup window will appear. In this window, click on "Add Account" as shown:

4. Yet another popup window. In this one Click on "Next" (the radio button "Email account" should already be defaulted.)

5. Fill in "Your Name" and "Email Address" (include the "@flex.com"). Then click on "Next".

6. For the "Incoming Server" put in "pop.gmail.com" and for the "Outgoing Server" put in "smtp.gmail.com" as shown:

7. For usernames, put in your username@flex.com as shown, then click "Next".

8. The Account name is just a description. Here I put it as "FlexGmail". Click "Next":

9. Thunderbird gives you a chance to look things over. So double-check. Now, click "Finish":

10. Find "Server Settings" under the description you entered in Step #8. Click on it:

11. Click the radio button "SSL". Thunderbird should then automatically put in "995" for the port where circled. If not, put it in yourself. Okay, now look for "Outgoing Server (SMTP) where it is circled. Click on it:

12. Highlight the connection you just made. Then, click on the "Edit" button on the right:

13. Double check to see that "smtp.gmail.com" is in the "Server Name" box.

Now, here is where it gets tricky... put in "587" for the "Port" as shown. Click on "Use name and password" and ALSO CLICK THE "TLS" radio button! You might think, oh, I have to click the "SSL" button, but that is wrong for Thunderbird. That's just how it is.

Click "OK":

14. Now click "OK":

15. You should be at the main screen of Thunderbird. Click on "Get Mail" icon at the top as shown:

16. A small popup box. Put in your FlexGmail Password which is initally your TEMPORARY PASSWORD but if you changed it, put your new password in. Click the check box "Use Password Manager..." as shown. Now, click "OK":

17. A warning screen comes up. Up to you if you wanna do all that. This walk-thru is just concerned with GETTING YOU UP AND RUNNING.

Click "OK":

18. When you first try to retrieve (SMTP) your email from FlexGmail, you will get a popup like below. Put in your FlexGmail password. And also check "Use Password Manager..." (similar to Step #16.) Click OK:

Your Thunderbird is now configured for use with FlexGmail and will automatically check for new incoming email every X minutes as set in Step #11.
