Human Cloning
Correspondent Report
By Michael Leland
Chicago
January 7, 1998
Introduction
A scientist in the midwest U.S. city of Chicago says he is
determined to begin work on cloning a human being, possibly by
late next year. Correspondent Michael Leland reports the doctor
says he would use the same process by which Scottish scientists
cloned a sheep last year.
Text
Dr. Richard Seed says he is putting together a scientific
team to help him accomplish the feat, and has several infertile
couples willing to be cloned. He realizes not everyone is in
favor of cloning human beings.
Richard Seed:
Most new subjects are frightening to people and they
generally pass through three stages: the first stage of
fright, rejection, and abhorrence. The second stage is
passivity and acceptance. The third state is
enthusiastic endorsement.
A national panel last year recommended congress pass a law making
human cloning illegal, but it has not yet done so. Dr. Seed
says he is willing to carry out his project in Mexico if he is
barred from doing it in the United States. (signed) neb/mjl/rae
