INDIA'S MOST FAMOUS ASTROLOGER DIES

New Delhi, India (AP) -- B.V. Raman, India's most famous astrologer, died Sunday in the southern city of Bangalore, his family said. He was 87.

Raman was editing his Astrological Magazine when he died of a heart attack, his family told local news agencies.

Raman, who promoted the scientific study of astrology, founded dozens of astrology study groups across the world and wrote more than 100 books on the subject.

He is survived by his wife, five sons and two daughters. Funeral arrangements were not immediately known.

Bangalore, Dec. 20 - Dr. Bangalore Venkataraman, one of the reputed astrologers of the country, passed away here this morning. He was 86. Dr. Raman is survived by wife, five sons and two daughters.

Dr. B. V. Raman, born in a village near Bangalore in 1912, had his early education in a village school and completed his collegiate education in science from Central College, Bangalore. He was engaged in the study of relations between cosmic and terrestrial phenomena. Through a number of books, lectures and research findings, Dr. Raman had popularised astrology as a science. His fields of research included, Hindu astronomy, astro- psychology, weather and political forecasts and disease- diagnosis.

Dr. Raman had travelled around the world several times and had represented India at the Astrological Conference at Cambridge in England and at the International Astrology Conference in New York. He had the privilege of addressing universities, medical associations and educational and cultural institutions on different aspects of astrology, Hindu astronomy, philosophy and Indian culture.

He had presided over several important conferences at both national and international levels and delivered a keynote address at the first international symposium on Vedic Astrology in October 1994 at San Rafael, California, U.S., where he was honoured with the ``life-time achievement award'' for his services to the cause of astrology. He was conferred the ``Man of the year-1995'' award by the Centenarian, Madras, formed in the memory of the Kanchi Paramacharya in February 1996.

He received an honorary Ph.D. from the Pythagorean University in 1947 and the same year he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, London. A member of the Royal Asiatic Society, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Literature by the Akhila Bharateeya Samskrita Sammelana in 1968 and an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by the Kumaon University in June 1996. Dr. Raman restarted The Astrological Magazine in 1936 and it is in the 62nd year of publication. In his book ``Planetary influences on human affairs,'' Dr. Raman has given a rational exposition of astrology.

He was assisted in his activities by his wife, Ms. Rajeshwari Raman, an exponent of Hatha Yoga. She is the Director of Sri Suryaprakash Institute of Yoga for Women.

The Civil Aviation Minister, Mr. Ananth Kumar, nephew of Dr. Raman, was present at his residence and paid his last respects. The Union Commerce Minister, Mr. Ramakrishna Hegde, the Chief Minister, Mr. J. H. Patel, and others have condoled the death of Dr. Raman.

Dr Raman had succeeded in creating awareness on scientific values of astrology and had written numerous books and articles on it. Dr Raman was the first person to address the United Nations in the early seventies on astrology. He had also visited a number of countries and propagated astrology and its use in daily life. He founded the All India Astrology Research Institute in 1994 to conduct research and other activities related to the subject. Besides, he edited the 'Astrological Magazine' for 63 years.

Bangalore: World renowned astrologer B V Raman, known for his relentless efforts to promote astrology as a science globally, died here on Sunday following cardiac arrest, family sources said.

Eighty-seven-year-old Raman, editor of The Astrological Magazine, a monthly, is survived by wife, five sons and two daughters. He had authored several books on astrology and founded the Indian Council of Astrological Sciences.

He had the credit of bringing out the magazine which had readers worldwide for an uninterrupted 63 years and edited it till the last, Raman’s daughter Gayatridevi Vasudev said.

As a result of his efforts, a group of Americans had come together and formed the "American Council of Vedic Astrology," she said.

He had attended several congresses in Britain, Japan and other countries. Raman was the first person to address the United Nations in the early seventies on astrology.

The cremation took place in the evening. Union Commerce Minister Ramakrishna Hegde, in a condolence message from Delhi, said he was shocked to hear the sudden death of Raman, whom he described as a world renowned astrologer and said his demise was an "irreparable loss" to the country.

DR. B. V. RAMAN: A PROFILE

Bangalore Venkata Raman

Born at a village near Bangalore in 1912 Dr. B. V. Raman had his early education in a village school. He completed his collegiate studies in Science at Central College, Bangalore. During the period of his studies in the University, he also specialised in homeopathy and obtained a Diploma.

He received an honorary Ph.D. from the Pythagorean University in 1947. In the same year, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, London and a member of the Royal Asiatic Society. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Literature by the Akhila Bharateeya Samskrita Sammelana in 1968; and in June 1976 the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by the Kumaon University (Uttar Pradesh). He holds a string of titles such as Abhinava Varahamihira and are "Jyotisha Bhanu", Jyotisha Vignana Marthanda", "Jyotisha Ratna", "Abhinava Bhaskara", "Jyotisha Bhooshana" etc. conferred by various organisations.

Dr. Raman has been engaged in the study of relations between cosmic and terrestrial phenomena, popularly going under the much misunderstood name of Astrology. He has been demonstrating by his writings and predictions made through his own journal The Astrological Magazine and other media that the astrological theory of cosmic influences affecting human life is essentially correct.

Through a proud number of books, lectures and researches, Dr. Raman has influenced the educated public and made them astrology-conscious.

His special fields of research are Hindu Astronomy, astro-psychology, weather and political forecasts and disease-diagnosis.

He has gone round the world several times --representing India at the Astrological Congress held at Cambridge, England and the International Astrology Conference at New York. He has delivered innumerable lectures in Germany, England, France, Italy, Austria, Holland, Canada, Japan and the United States of America, addressing Universities, Medical Associations and educational and cultural institutions on different aspects of Astrology, Hindu Astronomy, Philosophy and Indian Culture.

Dr. Raman's lecture on the "Relevance of Astrology in Modern Times" delivered at the United Nations, New York evoked much interest.

He has presided over several important Conferences at state, national and international levels.

The Astrological Magazine which he re-started in 1936, held to be the only journal of its type in Asia, has earned an international reputation as a great exponent of Indian Culture in general and Astrology in particular. Its views are held in esteem by the educated public. He has made through the columns of The Astrological Magazine and through his publications, several outstanding predictions about world events, such as the Second World War; its course and termination; fates of Hitler, Mussolini, Hirohito and other world celebrities; the Indian Freedom and other notable events such as Chinese Invasion of India, Pandit Nehru's death, Khruschev's fall; Johnson's elections; Nixon's election and fall; Indo-Pakistan conflicts; West Asian Wars; fall of Shah of Iran; Vietnam War; Emergency Declaration in India; the assassination of Bangladesh President; and death of the Soviet leader Brezhnev; assassination of Indira Gandhi, not to speak of earthquakes and other natural disasters.

In his book entitled Planetary Influences on Human Affairs, Dr. Raman has given a rational exposition of Astrology, defending his claim by statistical data refuting the stale arguments of the so-called non-believers and the skeptics.

Dr. Raman is not a professional astrologer but still is being consulted by saints, scientists, political leaders and heads of Governments and people from all strata of life and he is being visited by persons in all walks of life.

In his activities, he is assisted by his devoted wife Smt. Rajeswari Raman, who takes keen interest not only in Astrology but also in the study of Yoga, especially in its application to women. Mrs. Rajeswari Raman is a practical exponent of Hatha Yoga and is the Director of "Sri Surya Prakash Institute of Yoga for Women". In 1970 and again in 1981 and 1992 she visited Europe and America and delivered talks on Yoga, Indian Womanhood, etc., before various women's associations and cultural organisations.

Dr. Raman's recreations include lawn tennis and gardening.
