Q&A

Question
From: ___ Date: Wednesday, December 9, 1998
[...] Jai Maharaj, I wanted to know the origins/logic
of the Dasha System. It seems it is still unexplained.

Answer
Namaste!
It is well explained in the commonly-available texts, but I would like to make a couple of comments.

Jyotish has divine origins (of course, no one has established that it has not always existed so the subject of origins is presumptuous). The known, remembered and recorded archives do tell us that methods of associating events with planetary positions were used as early as 5,500 BCE. If you are authoring a book or an article please feel free to write to me about relevant citations, etc.

As far as explaining ideas and processes on the basis of "logic" is concerned, I think that we have to first define what is considered logical. For instance, are we talking about the modern, experimental statement/conclusion-example-conclusion logic or the traditional, established statement-reason-example-application-
conclusion logic?

An example of the modern logic system is:

1. All planets are in motion.
2. Mercury is a planet.
3. Therefore, Mercury is in motion.

An example of traditional logic is:

1. Mercury is in motion.
2. Mercury is in motion because it is a planet.
3. Whatever is a planet is in motion, for example Jupiter.
4. Mercury is a planet, it being invariably in motion.
5. Therefore Mercury is in motion.

Despite all this analysis, which may well lead to a paralysis :) , I submit that Jyotish, as all Vedic sciences, is valid because Vedic eminence is valid. To which, I add the validation from my own tiny station under my Gurus' feet: Jyotish works!

Best wishes,

Jai Maharaj

Question
From: ___ Date: Wednesday, November 25, 1998
I have a question about Rashi.
How is it determined and how frequently do they change?
If people are born on the same day, how many different
rashis are possible? Thank you.

Answer
Namaskar:
Although the word Raashi denotes the 1/12th equal division of the zodiac, different people mean different things when they use the word. For example, the question "What is your Raashi?" may refer to the Raashi in which the Moon is posited, or the Sun, or the Rashi that was rising at the horizon with respect to the time, date and place of birth. The following actual positions of the Lagn (the Rising Rashi), Moon and Sun for tomorrow illustrate how they change --the calculations are based on astronomical tables:

November 28, 1998, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA
Lagn (Rising Raashi, Rising Sign, Ascendant)
