EARTHQUAKE UPDATE
85 KILLED, 300 INJURED AS SEVERE EARTHQUAKE ROCKS NORTH INDIA

The Indian Express
Monday, March 29, 1999

Chamoli - At least 85 people were killed and nearly 300 injured as a severe earthquake rocked northern India causing widespread devastation in Chamoli and adjoining Rudraprayag districts of Uttar Pradesh shortly after midnight last night, official reports said.

Unofficial reports put the death toll at over 150 with debris of houses razed to the ground still to be cleared in the two
neighbouring districts. Uttar Pradesh chief secretary Yogendra
Narayan confirmed the death toll in Lucknow and said 56 people had been killed in Chamoli and 29 in Rudraprayag, reports PTI.

He said one column of army had been moved from Joshimath, 40 kms from Chamoli, for rescue operations while army and Air Force helicopters flew sorties from Saharanpur and Bareilly to assess the extent of damage. Road links between Chamoli , Gopeshwar and Ukhimath and Karnprayag and Almora have been snapped because of debris of collapsed houses and landslides. Border roads organisation was engaged in operation to restore the road links.

Text

the earthquake measured six-point-eight on the open-ended richter scale -- powerful enough to jolt people awake in new delhi, 300 kilometers away. the epicenter of the quake was near chamoli in uttar pradesh -- nestled in the foothils of the himalayas.

s. n. battacharya -- the deputy director of india's seismology
department says the quake struck at 35 minutes past midnight. he says it was a strong quake and his department has so far recorded numerous aftershocks.

battacharya:

"it is a big earthquake. so, after a big earthquake, you get small magnitude aftershocks. and we have recorded 20 or 21, so far."

a less powerful quake killed about one thousand people in the
region in 1991. authorities say search and rescue teams are in the area but it will be days before they know how many died. (Signed) neb/jlt/wd

Subject: MIDNIGHT QUAKE JOLTS DILLEE

MIDNIGHT QUAKE JOLTS DELHI

A Staff Reporter in Nayee Dillee
The Pioneer
Monday, March 29, 1999

It was exactly 12.35 am when the residents of Delhi woke up with a terrifying jolt a severe earthquake had rocked the Capital, lasting 30 seconds. Within minutes, there was a second round which was milder and lasted 10 seconds.

In a late-night release the Met office confirmed that an earthquake of severe intensity rocked Northern India (Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, UP and Chandigarh) late on Sunday.

There was no immediate report of any loss of life or damage to
property. However, some buildings developed cracks in Tarang
Apartments in Patparganj. A Met spokesperson said they were trying to gather information about the tremor from their various observatories. The intensity and the epicentre were being ascertained till reports last came in.

In Delhi, the quake was the most severe since 1980. The tremor had virtually all residents running out of their houses in sheer panic.

Though the jolts were felt all over the Capital, panic was
particularly acute in East Delhi where the police vans sounded the warning siren, announcing that everyone should come out of the house to avoid injury.

Incidentally, the Patparganj and Mayur Vihar areas fall in the
seismic fault zone, according to a survey carried out after the Latur quake.

Residents complained of beds rocking violently and almiras being jerked open due to the impact. Some residents of a Patparganj society even took to blowing conch shells in the belief that the resonance counters an earthquake.

A resident in Pitampura ran to check if the TV tower was still in place.

The animals felt it first. As if in warning, crows started crowing and dogs were out in the streets barking ferociously.
