Meat-Breast Cancer

A study of 14,500 Norwegian women revealed a positive association between the use of meat and breast cancer.

Women who ate meat five or more times per week had a breast cancer incidence 80 percent higher than those who ate meat only twice a week.

New Study Again Links Fats, Cancer

(AP) A new study adds to evidence that eating monounsaturated fats, the kind found in olive and canola oils, might significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer.

It also found that women whose daily diets included polyunsaturated fats, those found in other vegetable oils and seafood, had strongly increased the risk of breast cancer.

The findings by researchers who studied more than 60,000 women, in Sweden appear in Monday's issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, published by the American Medical Association.

Expert: Diet Changes Can Reduce Cancer Risk

London (Reuter) - Cancer is preventable and eating less meat and more fruits and vegetables could reduce cases of the disease by up to 40 percent a year, medical experts said Thursday.

"Dietary imbalance is a cause of cancer," Dr. Tony McMichael of the University of London told a news conference to launch a major report by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) on nutrition and cancer. . . .

People should change to a more plant-based diet and meat, if eaten at all, should be limited to less than three ounces or one portion a day, the study, the most comprehensive on diet and cancer ever undertaken, said.

"At least 20 percent of lung cancer, 33 percent of breast cancers and 66 percent of colon cancers are preventable by appropriate diets, together with the associated factors of regular physical activity and maintenance of healthy body weight.

Every year up to 10 million new cancer cases are diagnosed and seven million people die from the disease. Unless action is taken, experts estimate the number of new cases and deaths will rise to 14 million by the year 2020. . . .
