WIN9x Text utilities I have a thing about text editors. It's not like I write a lot. But for some reason, I just keep trying out new ones. Hey, I mean I sit in front of a keyboard all day, so what could be more natural? Since I hear from so many folks who are still using Notepad and Wordpad, I thought I'd enthuse a little about some alternatives. Couldn't hoit.
No matter what text editor you use, you need this program. WnBrowse isn't an editor, ya' see. It's a text viewer. Sounds summat mundane, I realize, but often you just want to look at a text file. In hex, maybe? Or one with a weird extension like .1st? Howzabout if you had a "browse" command in the Win9x context menus and could read anything with a single click? Fast, and with low overhead.
Trust me on this one, ok? Download version 4.1 for Win95/98 from here or from ZDNET (150k). Also available is a version for Win 3.1 (110k).
Install it, be impressed, and send Nigel some monetary appreciation. There are very few programs I find "indispensable". This is one.
PFE, the Programmer's File Editor is an old standby. A lot of 'net folks swear by this one, since it has a couple of Classic Characteristics. It's strong. And it's free. Originally designed for source code, it's evolved into a handy general purpose text editor as well. This is what I use as the seemingly obligatory Notepad replacement.
PFE is no longer under development. But that doesn't mean it's not worth looking at. To check it out, see the download page at Winsite.
TextpadThis is my Power Editor. It has the things you'd expect, like virtually unlimited file size, and regular expressions for search and replace. It also has some less common features, like:
For a full feature rundown, see the TextPad Home Page.
The latest release version is 4.1. You can find info links, as well as downloads for all three basic versions (English, German, and Japanese) on the main Download Page. A multitude of dictionaries for the spell checker are also available.
Class dismissed. Happy typing...
